LOST STAR, FOUND

In a Dream in a Vision of the night in deep Slumberings -- Had a dream where I found a star in the warm Earth, it lit up my face and made everything else seem blacker.

Using white pencil for the first time. Makes a good affect, I think!

SHOP OPEN

I have opened a BigCartel shop at www.zvk.bigcartel.com -- Because I am a first time seller and a big baby I will put up two prints today (MOON & SUN) and I'll put up a third (GRUB) later in the week. I've only had it open for a few hours and I've already had such a great response! A big thank you to everyone buying prints / your support pushes me to work harder XXX

SKETCHBOOK

My sketchbook is full of very scrappy sketches and folly drawings. I often draw something silly here and then draw it again, bigger and better and with more seriousness. I find keeping a sketchbook is not as intimidating as those big expensive sheets of Stonehenge paper!

DESK CLUTTER / SCRAPS & WORKS IN PROGRESS

Mess and clutter is inevitable. On my desk you'll find torn pages, teeth, Swiss Army knives, unfinished work, clippings, clippings and clippings.

GRUB

Something which took way too long to make! Many small parts, little direction. Got there in the end. Have made of prints of this which I will put up for sale on a webshop when I have the time.

THE ELEMENTS OF WOMEN

Set of 22 tarot cards
Graphite on watercolour paper

For my major work last term I had to make an artwork discussing ‘women in the western tradition’ which I thought was a very narrow (considering half the girls in my class are first-generation ‘westerners’) and very trite subject. I tried to bend the topic into what I do best.
Traditionally, each tarot card should represent an element of the average person’s life; these explore the components of the Western woman. Tarot cards perform as a map of mental and spiritual pathways and my artwork questions what ‘pathways’ women are expected to take. The ‘elements’ of the Western woman seem to only circulate suppression, shame and servitude and often contradict each other (shame / vanity, sex object / virginity). The tarot cards also allude to life as a crude game – one with many rules and a long history which it maintains today (*cough* just like the expectations of women *cough*)

FALLING AWAY FROM EARTH

This work is a little larger than A3 which is a big jump from my regular A5. I also did it on some really nice Stonehenge paper (as opposed to my regular cheap watercolour paper). I like how the paper is off-white.

I spent a long time using my stencil to create every single tiny circle and then draw around each little one.

I used mostly Derwent Sketching pencils (HB, 4B, 8B) but also an 0.5 mechanical pencil and a little HB Faber-Castell pencil I had found on the floor (ha ha). I also used a white pen for some of the stars (see detail) and an electric rubber for quick changes!

It took over 3 days to complete which is longer than I usually take (a few hours tops!).
